The Barossa Grape and Wine Tourism Association held their inaugural event 'Barossa At Home' this weekend. Forty four Barossa Wineries held various events. This ranged from the winemaker serving in the Tasting Room and being available to meet people and answer their questions, through to intimate dinners at the winemaker's home.
Rolf Binder decided to hold a Masterclass, showing the consistency of our style and focusing on three classic Barossans - the Shiraz, the Mataro, and the Grenache. These three varieties make up our Heinrich blend, taking the sweet luscious fruit of the Shiraz, the spicy, leathery earthiness of the Mataro, and the sweet confectionery and spice from the Grenache, to make up one of our more popular wines.
Rolf showed our guests around the cellar, tasting the 2009 vintage wines from tanks and barrels, explaining the differences between each vineyard and its 'terroir' - the rainfall, the aspect, the sunlight hours, the soil types, and all the other influences in the development of the grape.
It was interesting to see the differences in each wine, from the perfume on the nose, the fruit and weight on the palate, and the length and persistance on the finish. Some of the wines were still undergoing malo-lactic fermentation which made them a little fizzy, but this will smooth out as the Malic Acid converts to Lactic Acid, and all of those sharp edges are worn off.
Then it was back to the bar for some bottle tasting. The wines of the as-yet unbottled 2008 Heinrich Shiraz Mataro Grenache blend were taken from barrel in the morning, so it was interesting to see the finished wine in its separate components.
From the 2008 varietal wines, we then tried the recently bottled but unreleased 2007 Heinrich, followed by the highly cellarable current release of the 2006; the delicious and much-sought after (although long sold out) 2005 vintage; and then a special treat of the smooth and dark 2002 Heinrich.
The fifteen tasters came from all over Australia and were very impressed with the quality of the wines and the openness and willingness of Rolf with imparting information to their questions. The 2005 was the overall favourite of the day, followed by the 2009 which, although as yet unfinished, really showed the excellence of the vintage with its brilliant fruit and long finish. One by which you could really see the consistency of the syle.
The 2006 Heinrich is currently on tasting in our Tasting Room in the beautiful Barossa Valley and looks to be from a very good cellaring vintage. It retails here for $35 a bottle ($399 a dozen), or download our Order Form and fax it through. It can also be purchased from all of the very best retailers throughout Australia, and internationally.
