A couple of serious foodies, or "Gastronauts" as we like to call them, dropped by our Tasting Room on Saturday, recommended by others who take their food and wine very seriously.
Andrea and Elizabeth come from Canada, and together operate Andrea's food business Quince.
"Quince" is an all-natural food business situated in Vancouver. It provides pre-packaged restaurant-style meals, such as Roasted Root Vegetables, Creamy Mushroom Risotto, Slow-Braised Lamb Shanks, and Handmade Ravioli. These are filled with a variety of seasonings, such as Butternut Pumpkin and Goats Cheese; Duck Confit and Ginger; and a melange of Canadian Dungeness Crab and Leek.
"Quince" also caters for dinner parties and cocktail parties, with a wide selection of hors d'oeuvres, sauces and toppings, pastries and desserts, and gourmet lunches.
Add to the take-away food side of the business, they also run a cafe, and a cooking school.
And everything is done as much by hand using fresh local ingredients as possible.
Any wonder the girls needed a holiday!
Elizabeth is a Sydney-sider born and bred, so was spending a month in Australia visiting family.
Andrea could only make it for two and a half weeks, so she made sure a trip to the Barossa, followed by a week at the Australian Open Tennis in Melbourne was part of the adventure.
The girls loved the whole of the Rolf Binder range, from the crisp and fruity whites, right through the Tasting Room-only reds, up to the classic Bulls Blood. This was their favourite, as it is for many people.
However, the wine they left with was the 2008 Magpie Estate Salvation Gewurztraminer.
From our export labelled Magpie Estate range, the Gewurztraminer is sourced from the cooler Eden Valley where it retains its fresh acidity, despite being made in an off-dry style, with the impression of sweet, floral fruit following a perfumed nose.
Excellent with delicate, yet full-flavoured Asian foods, such as Japanese or Thai.
Also excellent on a Friday afternoon when you can put up your feet and relax from the working week.
The 2008 Magpie Estate Salvation Gewurztraminer can be purchased from our Tasting Room, from our order form, or from select retailers throughout Australia, the UK and the US.
Certainly worthy of a trip to the beautiful Barossa Valley!
