Christine Gordon Artworks

Saturday 1st November, 2008

We change our artworks in the Tasting Room every month, giving local artists "a go", and giving us a change in workspace that helps our own self-motivation and sense of refreshment.

This month we are exhibiting a collection of works by renowned Adelaide artist, Christine Gordon.

The clue behind this great skill is displayed in her artworks.

Christine is a bit of a shoe fetishist. She also has a penchant for hats. She is one of those people who can find worn-once designer gear in second-hand stores, when many others of us would not notice them. Christine is one of those people we all know who knows all the best Op Shops and can put together an ensemble that would look good on any catwalk.

The works that are displayed on our walls at the moment are a collection of linocuts featuring images mostly of shoes, but one highlights a stylish lady in a hat. The colours are bright and a stark contrast to our lolly-banana walls.

Christine describes her art and life philosophies thus:

For me, life is an aesthetic experience. I translate memories and observations into my work, creating images with a cheerful salute to rosier times gone by. I try to express personal stories in my prints, and capture the drama in the universal themes of companionship, love, age and imagination. By taking the viewer on a romantic journey along my life journey, I try to expose the intrinsic beauty in the banality of the everyday. I aim to combine the quiet solemnity, even gravity, which occupies my figures with an exuberance and joyful lightness.

I use a range of print-making techniques to produce my vision. Modern printing processes and the digital revolution are useful tools, but I work exclusively from original images created for the purpose. I enjoy working with linocuts, but aim for an original style and method. I use large scale images and many layers of colour to produce evocative images with texture and depth. I have a fascination with shoes (especially red shoes), believing that they can express attitude, emotion and the secret soul every bit as clearly as the face does. My 'portaits' capture as much as any traditional study, but focus on the lower half of the body. I try to capture body language in my work and hope to continue this exploration with further study in shoemaking and sculpture.

My work contains sentimental looks at simpler times, romantic images of my current passions, and a glimpse of where the journey may take me going forward. I don't wish to make political statements, social comment or self-important judgements; I want to expose my favourite things and weave together the emotions of joy, love and security. These have been gifts from my loved ones and I try to pass them on to the viewer.

My art is fun, as much for the viewer as it is for me.

So, if you are in the Barossa, make an effort during the month of November to come into our Tasting Room, enjoy a splash of some very fine wines, and be immersed in some very fine art.
